The view from 14th Avenue: There’s visible progress made each day. A Better Life is New Community’s permanent supportive housing project for the chronically homeless, which officially broke ground on Sept. 28, 2016. Soon after that, the foundation was in place, beams were erected and walls stood where there once was an empty lot near the corner of 14th Avenue and Camden Street in Newark. The two-story building will feature 24 efficiency units designed for individuals who are battling mental illness and chronic homelessness, with a designated unit for an on-site supervisor. Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care will provide on-site medical and behavioral health services. The roughly $8 million project is slated for completion this summer.
