NCC 30th Annual Parade And Festival Keeps The Spirit Alive

It was a day highlighted by marching bands, colorful floats, music, food, children's activities and plenty of camaraderie as more than 200 people turned out for New Community's 30th Annual Parade and Family Festival on a delightful Saturday afternoon.

"It was beautiful. I am having a good time," commented Malita Miller, a resident of NCC Manor Family, who was pushing her two-year-old daughter in a stroller through the spirited street festival following the parade.

Golfing For A Cause: Annual Classic Benefits Families and Youth Programs

Shandar Parker stood in front of a packed room at the Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, the site of New Community's 19th Annual Golf Classic. It was the evening reception where golfers have an opportunity to hear how proceeds from the event benefit New Community families and youth. Few were prepared for what Parker, 29, a former resident of NCC's Harmony House transitional living facility, was about to share.

"Hello my name is Shandar Parker. I just wanted to take a few minutes to tell everyone how me and my family struggled. On January 24, 2013, my 12-year-old daughter, Yesenia, was shot in the face by her father, which caused her to be wheelchair bound," Parker told the audience, as she pointed out her eldest daughter in the crowd.

Paul Berrian never imagined he would be homeless, but there he was at 52 years old, out on the streets.

"They padlocked my door because the house I was living in foreclosed because the owner was not paying the bank," he said.
