Answering The Call of Nursing

More than 600 family members and friends turned out to offer their
congratulations to the New Community School of Practical Nursing, Classof 2013, as the students took part in the traditional Capping and PinningCeremony that marked the completion of months of rigorous study.

Held at the New Community Neighborhood Center in Newark, the
ceremony drew loved ones presenting everything from flowers and
congratulatory balloons to the 82 graduates in honor of a job well done.
Some of the students had to overcome obstacles ranging from
homelessness to losing a loved one in order to complete the 14-month
program that prepares one to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, or LPN.

From Homeless to Homeowner

Joyce Misiani, mother of four children, was once numbered among the homeless. Today, however, she is proud homeowner. “Life is what you make it to be,” said Misiani, who now owns a three bedroom house in Irvington.

Misiani and her children were sleeping on cots in a friend’s basement floor in 2007 before she was introduced to Harmony House, New Community’s transitional housing facility for the homeless. She and her family lived at Harmony House for five months and within that time period, Misiani enrolled in the New Community School of Practical
Nursing. She graduated from the nursing program in 2008, determined to rise above her struggles.
