Support groups can provide a lifeline for caregivers, especially those caring for a loved one diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Support Group meets monthly at the New Community Extended Care Facility, located at 266 South Orange Ave. in Newark. The meetings are free and held the first Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. under the guidance of Veronica Onwunaka. Refreshments are served.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal brain disease causing memory loss and problems with thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies and social life. An estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with the disease, including more than 350,000 individuals and their care partners in New Jersey.

Laura Holly-Dierbach, vice president of programs and services for the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, said support groups like the one Extended Care has started “create a safe, confidential supportive environment.”
