Nonprofit Quarterly Reports On New Community, CDCs Role In Reviving Newark

Nonprofit Quarterly’s Rick Cohen highlighted the role of community development corporations in Newark’s renaissance in a recent article. Cohen’s essay was a response to two articles published by Politico—a profile of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and a comparison of Newark to Brooklyn—that focused on the role of developers who have wooed private equity firms to invest in the city’s downtown, meanwhile overlooking the crucial role that CDCs have played in stabilizing neighborhoods as Newark suffered disinvestment over several decades.

New Community, Cohen reported, is one of those key players, along with local CDCs including Ironbound Community Corporation, La Casa de Don Pedro, and Unified Vailsburg Services Organization. Read the entire NPQ article here.
