Free Mammography Screenings
Free mammography was recently offered through NCC’s Family Resource Success Center, which partnered with The Rutgers University “S.A.V.E. Women and Men Program” to provide the service to low income uninsured women. After signing-up inside the center, located in the Pathmark Shopping Center on Bergen Street in Newark, the women then walked a short distance and stepped inside the privacy and comfort of the fully-equipped mammography van. The van featured the latest digital equipment and an exam and changing room. Laverne Simmons of Newark, who works full-time as a security guard but is uninsured, was among the individuals who took advantage of the screening.
“I live paycheck to paycheck and haven’t been to the doctor in a couple of years,” said Simmons. “I came to Pathmark and saw the Resource Center and found out about the mammography. It’s a big help for me.”
Kimberly Williams, who recently moved to Newark from Charlotte, N.C. to be closer to her mother who had a stroke, also took advantage of the free mammography screening and a gynecological exam. “A lot of times, people don’t know what their family history is or how to conduct self breast exams,” she said. “I am even going to refer some male family members to this program for prostate screening.”
