IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN: FREE TAX PREP AT NCC

New Community Corporation is offering free tax preparation services at its Family Resource Success Center to qualified individuals during this tax season. The center is located in the Pathmark Shopping Center, 131-185 Bergen Street, in Newark. The service is being offered on Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The tax preparers are from the Internal Revenue Services’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which is celebrating its 43rd year. In 2013, nearly 92,000 VITA volunteers assisted in excess of 3.3 million taxpayers at over 8,000 locations across the country. The program offers free tax help to people who cannot afford professional assistance, explained Jacqueline Piper, the IRS tax specialist overseeing the New Community VITA site. Generally, that means low income individuals earning $57,000 or less, she said.

A major initiative of the program is to encourage taxpayers to file both their federal and State tax returns electronically. Each year, the number of taxpayers that take advantage of this method continues to grow.

Piper said the returns of same-sex couples are among those now being accepted. Returns from the past three years can also be amended to reflect joint filing status by same-sex couples, as long as they are filed by the April 15th deadline, she added.
