More than 100 teenagers spent their summer performing various jobs throughout the New Community network as part of programs designed to give them hands-on experience in a variety of career areas.
The workers were from the Newark One- Stop Career Center and the others were primarily from New Community’s Teen Learn and Earn Program and the RU Ready-For-Work Program.
Summer intern Jay Arias, 18, worked at the New Community Extended Care Center, performing various maintenance assignments.
“I feel like I’m making the people’s lives easy by helping keep the environment clean,” said Arias.
Terel Dyall, 16, incoming junior at Montclair High School, worked as a computer technician aide in the IT Department at New Community.
“What I like about my job is the variety of stuff I can create and do inside of the computers,” said Dyall.
Theresa Daniels, 15, rising sophomore at Newark Collegiate Academy, enjoyed her summer as well working in the New Community finance department.
“Every day I do something different,” she said, noting she spent a lot of time filing papers and making copies of documents.
