Women signed-up for free mammograms being offered through University Hospital, while other individuals gathered information on preventing childhood lead poisoning or enrolling in a business college. On the lighter side, dozens of youngsters had their faces painted in an array of colors and received balloons tied in different shapes from “Smiley” the clown.

All of this activity was part of the annual Harmony Day celebration sponsored by New Community’s Family Resource Success Center, a one-stop information and referral center located adjacent to the Pathmark Shopping Center on Bergen Street in Newark. The Harmony Day event was held in the rear of the shopping plaza parking lot, which was off-limits to vehicles for the afternoon.

Free hotdogs and drinks were a part of the celebration and everyone seemed to walk away saying they had an enjoyable time.

“It’s beautiful and especially fun for the kids,” said Tracy Carter, who was strolling through the Harmony Day festival, held on a sweltering July afternoon. “People can just enjoy themselves and have a good day.”

Al Covington, who had just moved to the area from Virginia, was also on hand to enjoy the Harmony Day Celebration, which also featured local entertainment, vendors, community organizations and government agencies, including those representing Essex County.

“This is a wonderful way to get the information out and to obtain hands-on materials,” he said.

Sponsors of the event included Drake College of Business,  Church at Shalom Inc., High Rollaz, Hobby’s Delicatessen, NJ PAC, GM Foods, Under Construction, The Coffee Cave, Heaven Williams, Primerica, United Healthcare, Progressive Homecare, Baltimo Party Rentals, Pathmark and the office of Newark Councilman-at-Large Carlos Gonzalez.
