Housing![]() The desperate need for affordable and livable housing in Newark's Central Ward was a key issue that motivated residents to organize New Community in 1968. Nearly thirty-five years later, housing remains a core of NCC's mission. NCC's real estate portfolio includes eighteen properties in Newark, Englewood and Jersey City that provide a range of rental and homeownership opportunities for families, seniors and the disabled. The sixteen affordable rental developments include 577 family Section 8 units, 1,077 senior Section 8 units and 877 family tax credit units. The developments include rental units ranging from efficiency apartments to four-bedroom units. Community Hills, NCC's newest residential development, includes 206 two and three bedroom town homes that provide affordable homeownership opportunities in a gated community for residents. Bergen Estates, currently under construction on Camden and Bergen Streets between 14th and 15th Avenues in the Central Ward, consists of twelve two-family homes that will provide homeowners with affordable properties. Each of the Bergen Estates homes will contain a rental unit that will produce a revenue stream for homeowners paying off their mortgages. The majority of New Community's housing is located in Newark's Central Ward and is bounded by South Orange Avenue on the north, Jones Street on the east, 15th Avenue on the south and Fairmount Avenue on the west. Located within short walking distance of these properties are the New Community Workforce Development Center, the New Community Neighborhood Shopping Center with its Pathmark and World of Foods, the New Horizons Community Charter School, the New Community Neighborhood Recreation Center and several restaurants. The properties are also served by extensive public transportation. Two New Community properties are located in Jersey City and one is located in Englewood.
