Lucent Online Youth Village

The Lucent Online Youth Village brings young people throughout Newark together online so that they can communicate, learn from each other and explore the world of work and the world around them.

Youth Village is a key element in helping young people prepare to compete in a technology-based economy.

The Lucent Online Youth Village spans the digital divide by allowing inner-city young people to become as familiar and comfortable with computers and technology as their suburban counterparts that grow with computers in their homes.

The Youth Village features its own website to enhance communication between young people as well as youth-service providers. Funded by Lucent Technologies, the Online Youth Village web site was designed and developed by the New Community MIS department's Webmaster/ IT Specialist: Andréa Honoré.

Youth Village will bring together youth from all neighborhoods to prepare themselves to communicate with and learn from each other, explore the world of work, and the wide world around them. Members of the Online Youth Village learn how to use the internet in a productive way through structured and unstructured activities.

Anyone can visit the Online Youth Village website at their leisure. Links to informational and other resources are available at the site. Weekly activities to engage young participants include chats with professional leaders, online visits to museums and exchanges with international students.

The Lucent Online Youth Village is another important step in helping young people living in inner-city neighborhoods such as the Central Ward bridge the digital divide.
