Clinical Medical Assistants

Clinical medical assistants who coordinate the activities of medical offices, clinics and hospital departments are in high demand. They are multi-skilled practitioners providing administrative and clinical health care services under the supervision of a physician. Medical assistants can maintain medical records, assist physicians during exams, document medical history and prepare charts for physicians.

The New Community Workforce Development Center’s Medical Assistant program allows students to specialize as a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, EKG Technician, Patient Care Technician and Medical Biller. The clinical procedures and lab techniques students study include injections, EKGs, vital signs, urinalysis, phlebotomy, assisting in minor surgery and emergencies. Front office training includes typing, transcription, patient data collection, insurance claim processing, booking, billing and collection.

Students who complete the training qualify for entry-level positions as a Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy Technician or Office Assistant. They can perform medical and lab procedures included in the course.

Students can specialize in the following areas:

Medical Assistant—Work in medical facilities providing services to patients.

Phlebotomy Technician—Collection of blood directly from a superficial vein.

EKG Technician—Recording electrical activity of the heart as it pumps.

Patient Care Technician—Performing the duties of a medical assistant/C.N.A.

Medical Biller—Collection and processing of medical claims and submission of bills.

Graduates receive a certificate and are eligible to sit for the National Certified Medical Assistant Exam sponsored by the Center for Competency Testing.

The course is divided into six intensive modules to prepare students to excel in the healthcare industry. Modules include instruction in the following areas:

Anatomy and Physiology
Medical Office Procedures
Medical Terminology
Clinical Procedure
Venipuncture/Phlebotomy
X-Ray
EKG
CPR
Emergency Medicine
Pharmacology
