The Lady Liberty Academy opened its doors in September 2001. It is New Communitys second innovative public charter school, and firmly establishes NCCs presence as a major community-based force in Newark education.
The new elementary school, which serves 300 students, is located in
the former St. Columba School in Newarks East Ward. Opened after
undergoing a $1.3 million renovation, Lady Liberty is home to students
in the Kindergarten through sixth grade. Lady Liberty will add seventh
grade classes for the 2002 school year and eighth grade classes in 2003
to become
a full K-8 educational institution.
Lady Liberty offers students an exciting, discovery-based learning experience that revolves around math, science and technology. It equips young people with the early skills and exposure they need to thrive in an information- and technology-based economy.
Several core beliefs serve as the foundation for education at Lady Liberty:
Academic success is within reach of every student. Collaboration and
involvement by staff, students and parents is critical to success. The
school community must work to build a culture that respects, promotes
and enhances the gifts of a diverse and multicultural society.
In addition to renovated classrooms, Lady Liberty features a state-of-the-art
computer lab and fully equipped science classes. Institutions represented
on the Lady Liberty Academy Board include the University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Institute of Technology
and Fairleigh Dickinson University.
