Celebrating 45 years of Improving Quality of Life for City Residents

History lessons from the turbulent 1960s and heartfelt testimonies from NCC clients who rose from hardship to success helped set the tone as New Community Corporation kicked off its 45th anniversary celebration during a program at its Newark headquarters at St. Joseph Plaza.

Donald Payne: A Human Rights Champion and a True Gentleman

When Rep. Donald Payne (D-10th Dist.) stood to address a group of 100 Chinese teenagers visiting New Community last summer, he could have easily impressed them by touting his own international stature as a tireless fighter for human rights in places like Africa. Instead, what the humble, soft-spoken congressman chose to focus on was the important role these students and ordinary citizens can play in influencing the political process.

New Community Success Story

Before Derek Culver entered New Community's Culinary Arts program in February of 2011, he had been unemployed for three years. His last job was unloading containers at Port Newark.

Preparations are well underway for the Annual Spring Festival sponsored by Friends of St. Rose of Lima, a festive evening set for April 21 featuring attractions like a senior dance-off competition, delicious soul food buffet and auction.

Many could have spent their spring break lying on a sunny beach, but instead a group of 11 students from Loyola University in Maryland shared conversation with seniors, tutored school children and engaged in other service projects at New Community Corp. in Newark.
