New Horizons After-School Program
Activities are planned based upon student age, grade level, and interests. All students have a portion of their time devoted to homework assistance and enjoy art & crafts, music, games and cooking activities. This program develops activities that promote mental, physical, and social growth.
Family Friendly After-School program at Newton St. Public School
This comprehensive program addresses the developmental needs of youth and the social service needs of their families. Students are given an opportunity to develop their talents, discover new interests, advance academically, and explore life-enriching possibilities.
Young Men’s Leadership Program
This program encourages young adult leadership and commitment to themselves and community. The program conducts a series of activities to develop personal, resistance and social skills to become young community leaders.
Saturday Fun Club
The SFC engages children ages 5-12 in stimulating and age appropriate recreational activities while providing a safe and nurturing environment during early afternoon hours on alternate Saturdays. Since 2006, the program has provided over 500 children with enriching and well-supervised programs. Activities include: sports and fitness, arts and crafts, science and cooking projects, drama and dance classes, field trips, and martial arts classes.
Positive Zone
As a program for youth 13-18 years old, it includes a multitude of activities during open gym time. Youth participate in activities and learn valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership and effective communication with their peers. Students can also get peer tutoring in math, English and Spanish.
Project VIP (Volunteering is Priceless)
Participation in community service has been shown to have positive effects on academic performance, critical thinking skills, values and commitment to activism. Community service activities include:;
• Tutoring
• Homework Assistance
• Community Beautification
• Reading to young children
• Toy and Coat Drives
• Working with senior citizens
• Preparing meals for the homeless
Just for Kids
This specialized program provides children ages 4-12 with educational and recreational opportunities as well as fun and interesting activities in which their time is well spent. Activities include homework assistance, tutoring, sports and fitness, arts & crafts and special events. John F. Kennedy Recreation Center offers its activities and services twice per week during after school hours
College Fairs
Free and open to the public, NCC College Fairs offer students and their families the opportunity to explore multiple postsecondary options in one location.
Basketball Tournaments
NCC collaborates with the NJ Education Consortium to provide students from the Newark area opportunities to learn and compete in a safe and nurturing environment. Students participate in a mini basketball camp and tournament that teaches the students valuable social skills such as teamwork, discipline and responsibility.
Father-Daughter/Mother-Son Dances
This special event is for girls and boys ages 4-17 and their father, mother or significant role model to enjoy an evening of dinner and dancing. The Father-Daughter dance takes place in March while The Mother-Son Dance takes place in December.
Newark Youth Leadership Project
This program is designed for high school juniors and seniors and offers a combination of learning opportunities integrated with employment experience, academic enrichment and field trips to colleges & universities
Teen Learn and Earn
This summer program is geared towards high school freshmen and sophomores and provides job experience and academic enrichment.
