Veteran Finds Help And Support At Family Resource Center

For Norris Woolfork, life had been tough. The 56-year-old former Marine had no permanent residence and also lacked a job.

One day while shopping with his cousin at the Pathmark in the New Community Shopping Plaza on Bergen Street in Newark, Woolfork noticed a sign for the Family Resource Success Center and decided to step inside. Today he will tell you it’s one of the best things that ever happened to him.

“They helped me get a security deposit for an apartment and furniture,” he said. “I was also able to get utility assistance and a referral to UMDNJ (New Jersey Dental School) so I could have a tooth pulled. They really stuck by me.”

Woolfork, who studied business administration and liberal arts for two years at Kean University, is also working at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons, New Jersey. Although he started in housekeeping last June, he is now doing office work—mostly patient intakes and making appointments, in addition to transporting patients around the campus.

“I really like it,” he said.

Woolfork still stops by the Family Resource Success Center to see Sharon Jackson, the worker who assisted him when he was “feeling down” and helped him get back on his feet.

“I still call Mr. Woolfork to check up on him and see how he is doing,” Jackson said. “He knows that the door here is open whenever he needs us.”

The Family Resource Success Center is located adjacent to the former Pathmark shopping plaza located at Bergen Street and South Orange Avenue. For more information, please call 973-565-9500.
