College Student Lands Job at Pathmark Through NCC

FRC Success Story-Jerel Waxter, Nov. 2013 Clarion, BESTJerel Waxter was determined to find a job. The 19- year-old filled out applications at various businesses every day over the summer and hoped for the best.

No response.

In late summer, he saw a sign on the window of New Community’s Family Resource Success Center in Newark, located in New Community’s Pathmark Shopping Center, indicating one could find assistance with job search.

“I came here and one of the ladies helped me put together a resume,” he said. “I took a copy next door to the Pathmark that same day. I then kept coming back to the center and Pathmark every other day.”

A week and a half later, Waxter was hired by Pathmark as a cashier.

“I love it, it’s great,” said Waxter, a graduate of Newark Collegiate Academy, who is now studying criminal justice at Essex County College.

Juggling school and work is not easy. Waxter attends classes in the morning and reports to work at the Pathmark by late afternoon, when his shift begins. He said he has told his friends about the Family Resource Success Center and encouraged them to stop by.

“They haven’t made their resumes either, so it is a good resource for them. It’s convenient and they are really interested in helping you here,” said Waxter, who attended Bloomfield College last year and plans to continue his education at William Paterson University once he graduates from Essex County College.

Joann Williams-Swiney, director of the Resource Center, said it is gratifying to know that the resources of the center have helped a college student who is diligently working to pursue an education.

“When I see Jerel passing by, it is just reinforcement that what we do here is making a difference,” she said.
