Annual Giving Campaign 2010: How Your Donation Works!AFTER THE FIRE, NCC FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER PUT THEIR LIVES BACK ON TRACK
November 2010
Maria Brinkley can remember the early morning hours of June 9th as if it were only yesterday.
“What woke me up was the smell,” she said. “At first I thought it was something on the stove, but it was actually more like burning wood.”
When she realized their Belleville apartment was on fire, she grabbed her 13-year-old son, Tyler, who was asleep on the living room couch. She opened the door to their apartment and was met by the choking, black smoke that filled the hallway. Brinkley could also see orange flames shooting out of a window of the building, which housed a pizzeria on the first floor.
The family lost everything, with Brinkley recalling how she had to hold her son back from trying to run back inside the burning building in a last-ditch effort to salvage some belongings from their second and third floor dwelling.
“To sit there later across the street and watch our belongings being thrown out the window was the most hurtful thing in the world,” said Brinkley, a single mother who even today breaks down in tears when she recalls the fire scene.
Brinkley, a 47-year-old unemployed social worker, found hope after the fire through NCC’s Family Resource Center.
“Everybody was just so helpful,” she said. “At first, I was embarrassed because I have never been one to take hand-outs, but I had to put my pride aside,” she said.
After living temporarily in a local hotel for about a month, the Family Resource Center staff was able to supply Brinkley with enough rental assistance to help her and Tyler move into another apartment. They also referred her to agencies that helped supply the family with furniture and clothing.
“I will never forget the look on my son’s face when he came home from school one day and saw the new living room set,” she said. “It was a beautiful thing.”
The center is still working with Brinkley, who holds a master’s in social work, and is trying to assist her in finding a new job. She was laid off from her old social work job in Middlesex County after the agency downsized a little over a year ago.
“I wouldn’t be in this apartment if it weren’t for New Community’s Family Resource Center,” she said. “Things have been tough, but at least we have a roof over our heads and hope for the future.”
