Board of Trustees

The members of New Community's original Board of Directors made twenty-year commitments to the organization. Thirty-four years later, two of the original members still serve on the Board. The long-term perspective and dedication to the community of its board members has served to keep New Community focused on its mission and goals over the course of nearly three and a half decades.

A diverse group, the NCC Board includes:


Arthur L. Wilson: President
Mr. Wilson is the principal of St. Rose of Lima School. He received his MA in School Administration from Seton Hall University.

Newton Richards: Secretary
Mr. Richards is retired from the NJ State Department of Health. He received his BA in Marketing from Seton Hall University and did graduate work in Public Relations at New York University.

Elma Bateman: Member
Mrs. Bateman is a retired AT&T Executive Secretary. She is actively involved in community projects in the arts, especially music and drama.

Felix Roig: Member
Mr. Roig is a retired Newark junior high school teacher. Prior to coming to the United States, he received his law degree and was a judge in Cuba.

Barry Baker: Member
Mr. Baker is a detective in the Newark Police Department. He is also pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. His prior experience includes six years in the US Army and two years as a supervisor of office services at a law firm.

Edgar Nemorin: Member
Mr. Nemorin is employed as an accountant for Lipo Chemicals, Inc. He has a BS in Accounting from Rutgers University.

Madge Wilson: Member
Ms. Wilson, a longtime Central Ward activist and former employee of the Newark Housing Authority, was part of the group of residents who founded New Community. She has worked in a variety of capacities for NCC.

Patrick D. Duff: Member
Mr. Duff, a private investor, worked at Tiger Management until 1993. He received his undergraduate degree from Lehigh University and his MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business where he has taught Finance. He is Chair of the New Community Foundation.

Desmond H. O'Connell, Jr: Member
Mr. O'Connell is a graduate of Notre Dame and Harvard Universities. He is Chair of the board of Serologicals Corporation.
