What is NCC?
New Community Corporation (NCC) is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive community development organizations. NCC is a major contributor to urban revitalization in Newark, New Jersey. Its economic development projects, housing, programs and services have been a primary force in reviving the city’s Central Ward. New Community works to fulfill its mission by providing decent and affordable housing, a safe and livable neighborhood, creative education programs, quality community-based health care, social services, job training, continuing education, community arts and neighborhood-based economic opportunities. NCC owns and manages 2,000 units of housing and employs 600 people. Its assets are valued at more than $500 million and its programs and services touch the lives of more than 50,000 residents of Newark and Essex County annually.
When was NCC founded?
NCC was founded by a group of dedicated residents of Newark’s Central Ward led by Father William J. Linder—then a young parish priest—in response to the Summer Disorders of July 1967. NCC was formally incorporated in January 1968.

NCC’s corporate headquarters is located in a formerly abandoned church in Newark’s Central Ward. Built in 1882, St. Joseph’s Church on West Market Street was once a thriving parish, but as the neighborhood changed, its parishioners virtually disappeared and the Archdiocese closed the parish. Work on transforming the shuttered church began in August 1983 and was completed a year-and-a-half later. Today, St. Joseph Plaza is a $2.5 million, 24,000 square-foot complex with a central atrium surrounded by offices, a three-story glass elevator and The Priory restaurant.

From the Garden State Parkway (North to South–Take Exit 145 to I-280 East. Proceed to First Street Exit. Turn right. Go to the third light at West Market Street (McDonald’s on the corner). Turn left. At the first light, turn left into the parking lot.
From New Jersey Turnpike–Exit 15W to I-280 West. Exit Clifton Avenue. Turn left and go to the sixth traffic light (West Market Street). Turn right at light on to West Market Street. At next light turn right into parking lot.
How many people does New Community employ?
NCC and its affiliates employ 600 people. Sixty percent of NCC’s employees live in Newark. More than 93 percent of the workforce is comprised of minorities.

Can I volunteer at NCC?
Many people offer their services throughout the NCC Network. Friends of NCC volunteer more than 433,000 hours of their time annually. The number represents the equivalent of 233 full-time employees, which means the Network receives a “grant” of $4,660,000 saved thanks to the service of volunteers. Volunteers come from schools, universities, churches and corporations throughout the region. Is NCC a nonprofit?
New Community Corporation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit community development corporation with an annual budget of $67 million. In addition to the numerous programs and services offered by New Community and its affiliates, NCC is the owner of for-profit businesses. The businesses generate income used to support other projects and programs and provide job training and employment opportunities for residents.

How do I arrange a tour of New Community?
Groups are invited to come to Newark to learn more about New Community by taking an NCC-sponsored tour of our facilities and programs. Group tours can be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Tours include an up-close look at NCC housing, job training, education programs, economic development undertakings and more.
