EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: BELANE BELACHEW

Around Harmony House Early Learning Center, Belane Belachew seems to be everywhere. One minute she can be cleaning the windows or mopping the floor, but in the next, you may see her responding to a call for assistance from a teacher in the classroom or the administrator.

“She’s a hard worker and although she’s still young, she goes above and beyond her job description,” said Sister Maurice Okoroji, center director. “She a very patient person and never complains.”

Belachew, 25, has been working at the center since she was hired in May of 2010.

“I vacuum, I mop, clean the garbage cans, windows, sweep the floor,” she said, when asked to name some of her duties. “I like everybody here and I’m happy helping,” she added.

It is when conversation turns to the 60 children enrolled in the center that the eyes of this shy young lady really light up and she flashes a big smile. The center serves children from infants to preschoolers and she knows them all by name.

“I love helping out the teachers in the classrooms,” Belachew said, noting she does everything from serve as another chaperone during outdoor walks to cleaning runny noses.

Tangula King, Administrative Assistant at Harmony House Early Learning Center, called Belachew a “special person” who is “patient with everyone’s demand.”

“From the time Ms. Belane has been working at Harmony House Early Learning Center, she has always shown respect to everyone. She is very committed to her job and is a little package that does a lot of work around the center, from taking care of the children to keeping the center clean and sanitized,” she said.

An Ethiopian native, Belachew came to the United States five years ago, joining her father. Her mother died when she was a teenager.

Belacew would like to one day become a make-up artist and obtain the necessary credentialing to work as a child development professional in the classroom.

Shamirah Brown-Butler, a teacher’s assistant in the Toddler I class, thinks of Belachew as “more than a co-worker” and just a very special person.

“We’re just elated to have her here with us,” she said. “The kids love her and she welcomes them with open arms. She is the best worker here and is always volunteering.”
