"A Look Back"

A Look Back: Famous Amos
Monsignor William J. Linder has hosted the most interesting individuals during his years at New Community. In this photo, Monsignor appears with Wallace “Wally” Amos Jr., far left, the American entrepreneur and author who founded the “Famous Amos” brand of chocolate chip cookies. Amos paid a visit to St. Rose of Lima School in Newark and in this photo was listening to several students take turns reading. Monsignor pastored St. Rose of Lima Church for 38 years until his retirement in June of 2012.
A Looks Back: Bill Clinton & Monsignor Linder
Monsignor William J. Linder, left, New Community founder and CEO, was invited as a personal guest to the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1992 after being named among more than 60 “faces of hope” across the nation. The “faces of hope” were described as people who met Clinton and Vice President Al Gore and their wives during their campaign and “touched and inspired” them. Clinton chose at least one person from each state.
A Look Back: Tom Kean Tours NCC
In this photo from Oct. 30, 1981, Monsignor William J. Linder, New Community founder and CEO, right, leads soon-to-be New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean, far left, and other officials on a walking tour through the grounds of New Community Commons Senior in Newark. Directly behind Monsignor is Joseph Chaneyfield, who was among the small group of community residents who joined with Monsignor in establishing New Community Corporation back in 1968.
A Look Back: Leroy & Dorothy Webb
The late Leroy and Dorothy Webb, in family photo at top left, were one of the first families to move into New Community Commons Family when it opened back in 1980. Their daughter, Vera Miller, in photo at right, now lives in the couple’s 14th Avenue apartment and recalled many good times. She said the complex was extremely family-friendly, with neighbors holding outdoor picnics on the grounds and looking out for each other’s children.
A Look Back
Voter registration and get-out-the vote efforts have been a major part of New Community since its inception.
